If I had known all that was going to happen I probably would have dreaded this weekend for weeks leading up to it but since life doesn't work that way, I just rolled with it. It wasn't even bad- but I feel like I took 3 weeks of mommying (is that a word? it is now) and crammed it into 2 and a half days. Of course, there are still 10 more hours in this weekend so who knows what else will come my way.
Friday afternoon: After 3 weeks of snot and drool and poor fussy babyness, Elliott sprouted his first tooth!! I was a little sad to say goodbye to that irresistible gummy smile but happy to have a reason for all those hard days and nights and hope that things could be better now (this kid has not slept for more than 3 hours at a stretch in weeks!!) To add to our joy, on Saturday morning tooth number 2 made it's debut. He must be feeling better because he has suddenly become a much better eater and has gone from refusing rice cereal to avocados, cheese, scrambled eggs, nectarines and toast- just this weekend!
I haven't got of picture of his pearly whites yet but here is my little guy WITHOUT the yucky, snotty nose that he has had for weeks. Yay!!
Also on Friday night...drum roll please...
Ollie pooped in the potty for the first time!!
OK. I cannot believe I just said that, let alone posted it for all the blogger world to see. Have I really become that Mommy?
Yes- and now I know why they do. It is a big hurdle that had to be jumped (but I didn't know when/how), a major change of lifestyle (undies and multiple trips to the potty and knowing where the nearest potty is at all times...) and a huge step out of babyhood for my (not so much) baby boy!
The funniest part about the whole thing is that I wasn't potty training him yet. I mean, we tinkle in the potty whenever it is convenient/or fun, but I haven't done any formal training yet. In fact, I have written on my calendar that this week, starting on Tuesday, July 18th, we will be starting potty training. Hmmm. I wish all of parenting was this easy.
I was getting dinner ready and Oliver was outside playing naked. He came in with a sense of urgency (walking kinda funny) and said "yucky! yucky! Mama, help" and I whisked him off to the potty and that was that!
(and, NO, don't worry, I didn't take any pictures- although I was very proud :))
Aaaannnnd, to top it off, the next morning he did it again.
Yay for potty training starting off strong! (and let's hope that wasn't just a lucky fluke :))
OK, so now we are up to Saturday.
Last week we had the pleasure of Sean's brother and his family come to visit and 3 year old Jacoby gave Oliver the greatest present of all time: freeeeeedom! Yes, in five minutes of play time in the bedroom, Jacoby successfully taught Oliver how to escape from his crib. I knew this day was close but I was hoping we could get a few more months out of the beautiful cage, eh hem, crib in his room. Well, after a few days of naptime and bedtime battles, we finally felt like maybe we should just take advantage of the opportunity and transition him to his big bed. So, last night was the night. I didn't hear a peep from his room all night but when I woke up around 6 with Elliott, I just couldn't help myself and had to go check on him.
I cracked the door so I could just get a peek of the bed and.... no Oliver.
I opened the door a bit wider thinking that he must be closer to the wall and....no Oliver.
I finally stuck my head all the way in and found him fast asleep on the floor at the foot of the bed, snuggling with Ned, the stuffed doggy. So sweet. And yet, another big step to boyhood. Sigh.
So this brings us to this morning, Sunday. Oliver has a new scooter (major thrift store score) that is really perfect for him: it's the right size and not too complicated but makes him feel like a big boy. We've only had it for a week and so far we have only used it on the sidewalk in front of our home but when we were loading up the stroller for our morning coffee/park adventure, it just seemed like a good time to expand our horizons- so much to Oliver's delight, we brought the scooter too.
So, in one weekend, my baby got his first two teeth and my little boy pooped in the potty, is sleeping in a big bed and has traded in his seat in the stroller for a scooter. Wheeewwww! I was not ready for all this but what a thrill it is to watch them grow!! Hopefully next weekend will be a little less eventful :)
My new view at the park. Slightly bittersweet, but I think I really, really like it :)
Love this post. So many huge milestones. Love the last picture. A whole new world! And embrace it. It's wonderful. How sad would it be if our boys stayed babies, really?!!! (That's what I keep having to tell myself, anyway. :-)
ReplyDeleteI look at that last picture and can't help but think, "More room for my purse!" ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Its funny but I too have noticed that those big milestones seem to come avalanche style.
ReplyDeleteI so enjoyed reading this over my morning cup of tea. Thank you for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Ollie! What a big boy--hope he continues! I love the scooter bargain!
